Ingredients

  • 1 pound regular-cut bacon
  • Optional: black pepper
Optional for sweet bacon twists:
  • 2-4 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoons maple syrup
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper

Method

  1. Preheat and prepare the pan.
Preheat the oven to 400°F for plain Bacon Twists, or 350°F–375°F for sweet or candied versions. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil or parchment, then add a wire rack if you want crispier bacon.
  2. Twist the bacon.
Hold each bacon strip at both ends and twist tightly from end to end. Place the twists in a single layer on the prepared pan or rack. Keep them close, but don’t stack them.
  3. Add flavor if desired.
Leave plain Bacon Twists as they are, or sprinkle with black pepper. For a sweet version, add brown sugar, maple syrup, and a small pinch of cayenne.
  4. Bake until crisp.
Bake at 400°F for about 20 minutes, then flip and bake another 10–15 minutes, until browned and crisp. For sweet or thick-cut bacon, bake at a lower temperature and watch closely near the end.
  5. Drain and cool.
Transfer the Bacon Twists to paper towels or a clean rack. Let them cool for 3–5 minutes before serving, since bacon crisps more as it rests.
